Ronda Rousey’s Amazing Life Story

She’s composed and confident in the Octagon, but that veneer of cool confidence only tells a part of the truth. The real-life story behind Ronda Rousey’s journey to superstardom is far more complex.

Girl From California

She conquered the UFC and WWE, and now she’s exploding into Hollywood – but how did a little girl from California find herself here? The answer is surprising, and the events that defined Ronda’s career will leave you shocked.

Early Speech Issues

The first major challenge Ronda faced on her long journey to superstardom began when she was diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech. Her struggle to vocalize her words properly led to bullying at school. So, already at a young age, Ronda had to learn to fight with her words, and with her fists.

Mentored By Her Mother

Like Ronda, her mother was also a fighting champion and wasn’t afraid to take a hit. She was the first America to ever win a World Judo Championship. At the age of 11, Ronda began training with her mom and soon succeeded her in skill. She trained with her mother for two whole years before accidentally breaking her mother’s wrist. After this, she moved on to tougher trainers. That is how she graduated onto the next level of her training. These trainers would make her great.

High School Drop Out

Ronda Rousey is very articulate and in some ways even a complete genius. You can see her talk during her past interviews or tuning into the WWE where is often on the microphone. Ronda Rousey appears to be a completely educated young lady. That said, most will be shocked when they find out that she is actually a high school drop out. Sitting down and studying just wasn’t something that she wanted to embrace. That said, she did go to an adult school and get a GED.

Breaking Records

Like her mother, Ronda was also one for breaking records and kicking butt. The year 2004 saw Ronda pack up her bags and head to Athens for the Olympic Games. At the time she was only 17 and the young judo player to even compete for a gold medal. Sadly, she wasn’t exactly a success during the bout and won not a single medal, but she did make history and break a record. This brush with the Olympics would not deter her spirit but only inspire to fight harder to reach her dream.

Ronda Is A Gamer

Ronda has many hobbies and some of these hobbies will catch you completely off guard when you hear about them. She doesn’t just fight, she also is a gamer. Not only is a playable character a slew of amazing games, but she games herself. Her top three consists of Mario Kart, World of Warcraft and Just Dance. Wrestling aside, Ronda also works with 7 Generation Games as a storyline consultant for educational games. This is something I know you Ronda Rousey fans didn’t know about.

Tragedy At A Young Age

Ronda was only 8-years-old when she had her first meeting with tragedy. Her father Ron was an athletic man just like her and her mother. Whilst skiing with his daughters he got in a terrible accident that resulted in a broken back. This would ultimately be his downfall.  For the rest of his days, he would deal with awful back pain. Doctors didn’t give him much hope as they told him that he’d eventually have to live as a paraplegic. He just couldn’t live with himself knowing this and took his own life as a result.

Marine Biologist Dreams

Ronda didn’t always have the hopes and ambitions of becoming a world champion fighter. There was a time when she was willing to settle for much more realistic dreams. From a young age, she was taken by ocean life. Imagine if that was her outcome. Her mother recalls her daughter drawing dolphins on nearly everything. She painted her whole bedroom as if it were in the sea. It featured sea lions, kelp, fish and of course, dolphins. Talk about an interesting obsession to have. Most kids that age are obsessed with cartoons.

Working At 24 Hour Fitness

Ronda Rousey did something that no other woman has done and won a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. You’d think she’d be rolling in the dough for the rest of her life afterward, but that isn’t the way it works. She stated in her own words. “There’s nothing put in place for Olympians after they’re done. They give you a couple grand, a handshake and they kick your a** out the door.” This resulted in her getting a night shift gig at 24 Hour Fitness.

Ronda Rousey Almost Didn’t Happen

Ronda Rousey has taken the world by storm by being almost always a dominant fighter in the octagon. She has created a legacy for herself. That said, her legacy almost didn’t become a reality. When she was very young, the world almost lost her. While still in her mother’s womb, the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck and began depriving her of oxygen. This was the start of Ronda’s first and possibly biggest fight. She survived the ordeal, but it led to some speech problems as a child.

Lowest Career Moment

Anyone who has put their all into this life and has worked hard to become something truly amazing and remarkable can tell you something about low moments. During an interview, Ronda was asked what the lowest moment of her career was. That moment goes back about 13 years. She replied, “I think when I lost in the early rounds of the 2005 Judo World Championships in Cairo. Because it was the first time where I thought I really performed below my potential.” Nobody likes to feel like they aren’t giving it their all.

Ronda’s Favorite Eats

She was asked where she loved to eat and what she usually ate. She responded with, “I think Maxwell’s in Venice. It’s a breakfast joint, the garbage omelette and french toast are my jam. Actually, no, scratch that, Sauce on Hampton is my favorite.” She further said, “I order from there all the time, I’m obsessed with their sweet potatoes. I’m not a big foodie. I like eating at home. I’m not saying restaurants, but every meal that I had in Armenia was the best meal I had in my life. That was my favorite place to eat.”

A Mother’s Word Of Advice

Many look at famous people and wonder what gave them that extra push. Ronda says that her mother gave her a piece of advice when she was young that completely changed her life. “No one has the right to beat you. Someone has to be the best in the world, why not you?” Ronda says that she applies this advice to every aspect of her life. It doesn’t matter if it is fighting, writing, acting or business, she will apply it and give it her all.

She Was Vegan

While one wouldn’t exactly expect this from a fighter, there was actually a point when Ronda Rousey was trying pretty hard to being a vegan. This was back in 2008 and sadly, it wasn’t a diet that she could keep up. It left her with a very small amount of energy. She reported that she began suffering from a lot of health issues and needed protein to continue with her career. That said, she has stated that she will delve back into the vegan lifestyle once she retires from fighting. Hopefully, this won’t be any time soon.

Her First MMA Fight

The world of fighting was very different before Ronda became a huge name. When Ronda Rousey decided to delve into the world of MMA, she had a very hard time finding an opponent. Hayden Munoz was the first woman to step up and she paid for it dearly. While most expected a pretty good fight, Ronda Rousey shocked everyone and took her down in 23 seconds. She used her armbar and shot to a quick victory. The crowds were instantly taken by her and it was quite obvious that she’d be a big name contender.

First Female Guest Anchor

Ronda Rousey has made lots of history during her still-fresh career. In 2015, the athlete made history again by being the first female to ever be a guest anchor on Sports Center. She knew she’d be the first beforehand and released this statement, “I’m excited to co-host SportsCenter with Lindsay on Wednesday. I’ve always appreciated the support ESPN has shown me and I’m honored to be the first female celebrity co-host!” What record will this champion break next?

Not A Role Model

Ronda Rousey has been quickly labeled as a role model for young girls everywhere. That being said, it is not a title that she likes. She told USA Today, “It is very flattering. I have tried to do my best, but sometimes I feel I am not infallible enough to really be the perfect role model for little girls.” The interview didn’t end right there. She further stated, “I try my best, that’s the best that I can do. I’m sure some mothers are happy about it and some don’t approve and that’s up to them and how they choose to parent.” We can’t disagree with her.

Starring In A Road House Remake

Road House was one of the greatest movies of the 1980s. It featured Patrick Swayze as a bouncer who kicked lots of people out. Road House will soon be remade and who better to star as the main character than Ronda Rousey? She said the following, “I couldn’t be more grateful to have this opportunity to pay respect to the beloved Patrick Swayze… I promise to work incessantly to make sure this project is a tribute to his family and fans can be proud of.”

Big WWE Fan

Most probably would have never guessed that Ronda Rousey was actually always a big fan of the WWE, even before she ever became an active part of the show. She was watching it all the way back in the days of Stone Cold and The Rock. Once she rose to fame through her Olympic and MMA career, she decided to head for the WWE. She has become one of the company’s biggest stars at this point. Talk about truly living your dreams.

The Incredible Ronda

After headlining WrestleMania 35, however, a rumor is circulating that she might not return. Wrestling fans are distraught – but the reason might make them feel better. Apparently, Rousey is being considered for the role of She-Hulk in the next big Marvel movie. The She-Hulk is Bruce Banner’s cousin, who becomes super-powered after receiving a blood transfusion from her cousin. In real life, radiation is deadly, so don’t try any experiments at home!

Perilous Life

While filming an episode of “9-1-1”, a boat door fell on Rousey’s finger and nearly severed it. The injury required a trip in an ambulance and emergency surgery. But the athlete came back to the set to complete the episode the following day. This is truly an act of bravery, one that is just as memorable as her performances in the ring.

Addicted to Coffee

Ronda Rousey is a self-professed coffee addict. Despite what diet she has taken up for fighting or what her trainer says, coffee stays. They have tried taking it away and she recalled it here by saying, “He (her nutritionist) wanted to take coffee out of my diet at first; we had to have a little bit of a discussion.  I was like, ‘I don’t care what I have to do, but I NEED COFFEE! So that’s why we grind up a bunch of wheatgrass, parsley, cilantro and sprouts every morning – a green shot – and I take that every morning to try and combat my addiction to coffee.”

Silence Before Fights

Most people imagine needing to be hyped up before fights with loud music or something. You picture the trainer yelling out some inspiration speech and a lot of hopping around. Rousey needs her silence before her fights. During a Reddit AMA, Ronda stated, “I have complete silence before I walk out before a fight. No talking in the locker room, no music, cellphones on silent. If I hear a ding from you taking a video you’re gonna get your own private Rowdy Glare.” We can definitely see how this would do some good.

First Female UFC Fighter

In February 2013, Ronda Rousey became the first female to ever be in the UFC. Dana White, the President of the UFC stated the following before bringing her into the organization, “She’s a real fighter and she’s very talented. She has the credentials, the pedigree; I mean everything. I think she has that ‘it’ factor. I think she’s going to be a big superstar.”

Eating Disorder Day

Ronda’s career started in Judo competitions, but she had to start in low weight classes. She explained that she used to associate the feeling of fullness with guilt and that every meal would bring on intense resentment. Now she’s cured and celebrates it. She stated, “I feel like I have so much extra space in my brain now that I’m not constantly thinking about the next meal and trying to eat as much as possible every day while still losing weight. I feel amazing. I (think) I look amazing. And I just ate some french toast this morning.”

Living In Her Car

Back in 2008, Ronda was struggling to make a living and went through a brief period of living inside of her car. She had all her personal belongings in there including her clothes, her Olympic medals and old UFC programs. This was around the same time that she was working at 24 Hour Fitness. Luckily she rose out of that situation as a champion.

First Hospital Trip

The first time Ronda Rousey ended up in the hospital emergency room wasn’t due to one of her big fights. It was a movie snack that brought her down. She and her older sister used to do all sorts of funny things like make faces and shove candies up their noses. One incident involving a Raisinet stuck up her nose led to her in the hospital emergency room. By the time they got there, the candy had melted enough and fell out by itself.

Her Type Of Man

Many people often wonder about Ronda’s love life. This has been something on a lot of minds. Ronda was asked in an interview what kind of men she liked and if they were ever intimidated by her, and she stated the obvious with her answer. She said, “Some guys are, but I feel like that just saves me time. If a guy is easily intimidated by a strong woman then that’s obviously not the kind of man that I would be interested in any way.” Ronda needs someone who is open-minded and confident.

Her Mother Was A Powerhouse

She described her mom as a superhero and told of all her success, “My mom is like an X-Men. She’s unbelievable. She got a perfect score on the SATs at 16, graduated college at 19. She won the world championships in Judo as a single mother, working as an engineer, and getting her PhD. All at the same time. And then after my dad died she took a business from scratch and turned it into a multi-million-dollar company. She’s absolutely amazing. Every single day I just try to be a little more like her because if I was doing that, I know I’m improving as a person.

Her Medals Are Gone

She once prided herself in all of her medals and trophies. Who wouldn’t, right, because if you win something then you should be pleased yourself. She had them all in a box and was planning to decorate her room with all the medals. One day her cat relieved himself inside the box.  All her medals were drenched. Not wanting them inside of the house, her mother took the box and threw them all in the trash. Ronda was shocked but, has since gotten over it. She’ll always be in the history books, so what do medals matter?

Quiet In School

Back in her high school days, Ronda was not very popular at all. She stated the following during an interview, “I was really shy and quiet. I was never very popular in school. I was made fun of for being muscular a lot so I always wore really baggy clothes . . . just very introverted.” She further stated, “I had like two lives. I would go to school and be this introverted loser kid that no one really knew.” Things were different when she was training. She had friends and was very appreciated for her athletic abilities.

Red Carpet

Ronda Rousey is always remembered for the very memorable dresses that she always sports on the red carpet. They are truly unique and unlike anything that has ever been seen on the red carpet before. If you don’t believe us, take a look at this dress. Here is Ronda is a very classy black and white number. We don’t know the exact name of this event, but no doubt she stood out amidst the other girls there. No one else could have worn a dress with as much class as she could have.

All Her Boyfriends Have Been Named Bob

They aren’t literally named Bob, but that’s what her mother calls all of them. Her last boyfriend called Bob 6. Her reasoning according to her is because “What’s the point in learning his name if he’s not going to be sticking around?” Furthermore, she doesn’t call just Ronda’s boyfriends Bob, but all of her daughters’ boyfriends. She doesn’t even say it behind there back, she calls them Bob to their face. This is definitely something that will drive the boys away from her.

Her Marriage To Travis

In 2015, rumors started floating around that she was in a relationship with Travis Browne. The rumor was spread by Travis’ ex-wife who saw a picture of them together on Twitter. This pretty much let the cat out of the bag and the world was looking on with open ears.  Browne confirmed it later that year and they brought their relationship into the open. Two years later the couple got married in New Zealand. He didn’t only get Ronda as a wife, but he is no longer called Bob by the people in her family.
